Mo' meta reviewsTuesday, June 18, 2013 Nas: Illmatic (Columbia '94)In Mo' Meta Blues, Questlove describes "hip hop's funeral": thebattle of the debuts at the Source Awards, when Biggie's Ready toDie buried Nas's Illmatic, already a critical and in-crowdlegend, and he watched Nas "wilt in defeat" in the Tommy Hilfigershirt his manager had just financed. Sez Quest to Black Thought: "He'snever going to be the same. You just watch." And he was right. Nasimmediately transformed himself into a hit-seeking faux gangsta ofdepressing conventionality and didn't make another good record foreight years. That still begs the question, however, of exactly howgood this spartan effort was and is. Better than I thought at the timefor sure--as happens with aesthetes sometimes, the purists heardsubtleties principled vulgarians like me were disinclined to enjoy,especially beatmaking where Large Professor along with such fellow NewYork smoothies as Pete Rock, Q-Tip, and the great Premier convertsamples into haunting looped groove elements. Also enjoyable is Nas'sability to transform simple lines like "I never sleep because sleep isthe cousin of death," "I'm out for presidents to represent me," "Theworld is yours," and even "One love, one love" into de factohooks. And my mind tells me that I have to admire how cagily he walksthe line between doing the crime and hanging with homies for whomnothing else is "real" even if my heart isn't in it. PieSpy operates by interpolating channel activity into diagrams designed to reflect the strength of relationship between each user in the channel. The generated diagrams contain clusters of nodes joined together with lines, with each node corresponding to a user active within the channel. The connections between the nodes, and the position of each node relative to the others, form the crux of the analysis. Those users who seem to be addressing one another are shown to have a stronger connection to each other than to others in the channel, indicated by the proximity of their respective nodes and the thickness of the line joining them together. Similarly, those users who participate more in the ongoing conversation are given a more dominant role in the channel than those users who say relatively little, and are shown to be nearer the centre of the cluster of user nodes. The end result of using PieSpy to analyze the manuscript transcript is a collection of about 200 diagrams. These can be strung together into an animation that shows the evolution of the conversation taking place.
This is a lovely piece of work that I recently finished playing. Everything about this story captivates me, especially the characters, who feel amazingly real. The dialogue was well-written, well-paced and I could almost close my eyes and picture everyone right in front of me.There are multiple themes explored in this game, and I love the ideas of self-made identities, dreams, and creativity. It really makes you think, and what I admire is that the game doesn't spoon-feed the messages to you. You have to stop and draw conclusions through seemingly random connections and lines of text. The story prompts you to stop at every turn and analyze it as the twists and turns keep coming. At no point is this game ever predictable, boring or rushed.
